NEWSLETTER N º 23: Energy consumption in Portugal in 2010

The Directorate General for Energy (DGEG) has published some data on electricity consumption in Portugal last year. Thereafter, the power consumption in 2010 has increased over the previous year by 4.7%. Corrected for average temperatures and days of the week, the increase was 3.3%. The annual consumption amounted last year to 52.2 TWh (terawatt hours = billion kWh) and was thus 3.2% higher than in 2009.

most, namely by 11.5% of electricity consumption increased in the segment the high voltage (AT - Alta tensão). This is mainly due to the fact that was taken in the second half of 2009, a new paper mill in operation. Added to this is that the economic sectors producing (in addition to paper) in the chemical and cement exports because of continuing high level. In the field of medium voltage (MT - Media tensão) there was an increase of 4.5% after the consumption in 2009 has decreased. The weakest rose in 2010, electricity consumption in the range of low voltage (BTN - Baixa tensão Normal). Households spent just 1% more. Excluding that amount because of the high temperatures in summer, and the input front payments from the year 2009 and the consumption of households in the last year against the same period has remained the same. The increase in power consumption over the past year are essentially due to the fact that some wholesale produce vigorously and successfully for export.

An ordinary share of energy produced in Portugal now comes from renewable energy sources (ARR). End of November 2010 were 9453 MW of operating FER. In 2009 came 45% of the electricity consumed from ARR. The proportion of FER should be increased in 2010 to half of total production. Because of the high rainfall, is the energy production of hydropower plants in the Measured from January to November 2010 on the same period last year increased by 98%.

Best regards.
